Tamil New Year 2023

According to the Tamil calendar there are 60 years. Starting from Prabhava to Akshay year (1 to 60 names). Now the 10th year is called “Dhadhu”. For example if a person is born in the 10th year – Dhadhu – he/she lives all the 60 years and reaches the same year “Dhadhu” in his/her 60th birthday. Hence the 60th birthday becomes a milestone birthday!!

People celebrate the Tamil New Year with great enthusiasm. And all pray to God so that the New Year brings good things to all! All the religions of the world are pro women!!

A research study conducted by WHO interviewed many ladies and askedd “what is upermost in your mind now?” This was put forth to different ladies across belonging to different cultures.. And believe it or not they all answered in unison “What to cook for the next meal?”.

But have you ever wondered about the fact that all the festivals have fixed menu!! So that women folks are free of headaches about what to cook!! (for that festival…)

Pongal day, we cook sweet pongal, urad dal, vada, etc.. Diwali lots of goodies like adirasam, murukku, etc., Christmas time its cakes, baked turkey, etc., Ramzan the most flavored spicy biriyani, brinjal dish, etc.

The menu for Tamil new year can be short or elaborate but payasam, mango patchadi, mixed rice, vadai and ofcourse rasam, curd and sweet poli is a must. Special pooja happens in the temples and people visit their friends and relatives to exchange sweets.
